11 Migrants Have Qualified For Asylum Under Remain In Mexico Program: Report

Migrants, most of them asylum seekers sent back to Mexico from the U.S. under the “Remain in Mexico” program officially named Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), wait in line to receive bottles of drinking water by a makeshift encampment in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, Oct. 28, 2019.

Of the nearly 50,000 who were under the Remain in Mexico Program in September, just 11 individuals were granted asylum into the U.S., The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Remain in Mexico, also known as Migrant Protection Protocols, requires asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims are processed in the U.S. immigration court system.

Democrats have called for the defunding of Remain in Mexico, but the Department of Homeland Security has touted the program as vital to controlling the border crisis. read more

  • That authority comes from Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows the president to “impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”

Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein encouraged then-President Barack Obama to use the “very broad power” granted to him by Congress to limit immigration in any way he saw fit, according to a letter obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation. read more
