The Country is up in arms regarding some suggestive signs posted outside an Old Dominion University Fraternity House.
Elisha Fieldstadt at MSNBC writes that, “Crass, sexually suggestive banners ‘welcoming’ freshman women to a Virginia college last week have sparked outrage and led to the suspension of at least one of the school’s fraternities. The white signs draped over the balconies of an off-campus Old Dominion University house read “Rowdy and fun, hope your baby girl is ready for a good time,” “Freshman Daughter Drop Off” and “Go ahead and Drop Off Mom Too.”
“The Sigma Nu chapter at ODU has been suspended while the school investigates the incident,” Brad Beacham, executive director of Sigma Nu’s national headquarters said. “Any fraternity member found to be responsible for this reprehensible display will be held accountable by the fraternity,” he added.
Now, I’m not a college age teen or 20-nothing, and as such, I agree that the signs are tasteless, but I’m also not that old that I don’t remember being that age. And I can pretty much guarantee that the majority of students who saw those signs thought they were both funny and relatively harmless.
But in today’s oversensitive, over-feminized world, we’re not allowed to make light of such a thing. It’s partly because of the hopelessly overblown rape culture on college campuses these days. Yes, there are rapes on college campuses, just as there are rapes in other places. But there is no empirical data to show such an epidemic as being described by college activists. I’m not making light of rape. It’s abhorrent, but these signs don’t say “We intend to rape your daughters.” read more
