Oregon’s Poor Will Soon Feel the Effects of a New Minimum Wage

by: the Common Constitutionalist

Last week Oregon Governor Kate Brown gleefully signed into law a progressive statewide minimum wage increase. It will be phased in over the next six years, starting this July. “I’m proud to sign into law my top priority of the 2016 Legislative session — raising the minimum wage,” Brown said in a statement. She said the new law “is a path forward – so working families can catch up, and businesses have time to plan for the increase.” Plan to close down or lay off half their staff maybe.

The current Oregon minimum wage is $9.25/hour. I say progressive because the area of the state will determine the base “living wage.” If one works in rural Oregon the wage will increase to $12.50/hr. – small cities and towns, $13.50 and large cities like Portland, the hourly minimum wage will top out at $14.75.

But as is being reported, some are still not satisfied. And why would they be? We should know by now that the far left can and will never be placated. No matter how much wealth government redistributes, it will never be enough.

A left wing advocacy group, “Oregonians for 15,” is unsatisfied with both the amount and phase-in time. They want $15/hr. in three years. They are threatening a State ballot initiative this November if they don’t get what they want. read more

Want to Get a Job – Put Down That Joint

by: the Common Constitutionalist

With each passing year of the Obama experiment, finding a job has become more difficult. We all know of the often used statistic of over 93 million unemployed and underemployed. Scores of kids have accumulated massive college debt coming out of school with little to no prospects, forced to move back to mom and dad’s.

So what can one do to gain a competitive advantage over other job seekers? Well, one way is to not start smoking pot, and if you are, put down that joint.

In February of this year the Washington Post wrote that “The federal government’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports that in the aggregate, Americans used marijuana on over 3.5 billion days in 2013, a rise of 57% since 2007.”

And there is a dramatic rise in the use of pot among high schoolers. The government drug abuse.gov site  reported that “A growing percentage of students in the 8th, 10th, and 12th grades are using marijuana on a regular basis, according to the 2010 Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey. Most notably, daily marijuana use increased by more than 10% in all three grades since the 2009 survey. Rates of past year illicit drug use in 2010 or 16% in the eighth grade, 30% in the 10th and 38% in the 12th grade. The recent rise in marijuana use follows a 10 year period of decline.” read more

An Argument for Amnesty

by: the Common Constitutionalist

I’ve had an epiphany recently. For years, heck, as long as I can remember, I’ve been dead set against any form of legalization or amnesty for any person illegally here in the United States. Whether it be an illegal who waded across the Rio Grande, the Swedish Bikini team who overstayed their visas or a child who was brought here illegally by his or her parents.

It didn’t matter to me how they arrived or why, or what their reason for staying. They all had to go, I thought. I was unapologetic and steadfast.

Well, times have changed and we dusty old constitutional conservatives must change or be left behind.

I hope you will now join me in converting to the pro-amnesty side as I lay out my argument.

The crux of my reasoning has more to do with current American citizens then those as yet undocumented.

Now, back in the bad old days citizens were expected to get an education and then venture out into the world to earn a living. One was actually expected to work for a paycheck. Seriously? Yes – I’m not kidding. read more

SEIU Will Kill the Fast Food Industry

by: the Common Constitutionalist

If you live in a major city, soon if not already, you will not be able to get fast food.

What are the soccer moms to do? Here’s an idea. Go home and make dinner. It shouldn’t be that difficult, judging by what we see on the politically correct McDonald’s commercials. Just dress up like a clown and serve your kids apple slices and milk. And don’t forget to recycle!

Anyway, our old communist pals are at it again. The SEIU is whipping up a frenzy among fast food workers with a call to strike. Workers in many cities have already walked off the job.

SEIU boss Mary Kay Henry granted an interview with fair and balanced Salon.com. Seated in her posh Washington DC office she told Salon, “see the fast food workers as standing up for all of us. Because the conditions are the same.”

Really Mary? The same as what? The same as your condition? Not hardly.

In 50 cities across the nation workers will walk or have already walked off the job. The strike against all the major fast food chains is for more pay and a chance to unionize.

The arbitrary number they have chosen is $15 an hour. I say arbitrary, because it is based on nothing. Someone just pulled it out of a hat. Why not 20, 50 or $100 an hour?

The argument is always the same; a living wage. No one can live on $7.25 an hour, the current minimum wage. I’m sure that’s true, but the average fast food worker doesn’t make minimum wage. The average is at least $9 an hour according to the Bureau of Labor statistics. read more

33 Shocking Facts That Are All Bush’s Fault

by: the Common Constitutionalist

The other day Rush Limbaugh spoke of an article posted on Zero Hedge. If you’re not already – you should become a regular reader.

The article entitled “33 Shocking Facts Which Show How Badly the Economy Has Tanked under Obama.” Okay, it’s a bit wordy but it does alert you.

After reading it I couldn’t let it go without editorializing on at least some of the 33 facts.

If you’re an Obama sycophant, you may want to make yourself a little sign to hold up while reading. When you feel “The One” has been somehow maligned, just hold it up in front of you. The sign should simply read, “It’s All Bush’s Fault” or “Obama Inherited This Mess”.

Once a month the “jobs” or employment numbers are released. Oftentimes the media hail improvement in the figure, as if we were heading in the right direction. What they fail to report, due to agenda or ignorance, is that, “#2: Since Obama has been president, seven out of every eight jobs that have been ‘created’ in the US economy have been part-time jobs“.

That is an astounding figure and ties directly into the reason that, “#4: It is hard to believe, but an astounding 53% of all American workers now make less than $30,000 a year”.

Now you’ll notice the last quote stated “American workers“, for we’ve seen and heard that many welfare recipients clear far north of $30,000, tax-free.

I wrote an article some time ago trashing LBJ’s “Great Society” and “War on Poverty”. In it I stated that the poverty rate when the “war” began in 1965 was about 10%. Decades later and trillions of dollars of transfer payments later led to a rate still around 10%. Well, sad to say, there is an update: “#14: The poverty rate has shot up to 16.1%. That is actually higher than when the war on poverty began in 1965”.

Which dovetails directly into: “#15: During Obama’s first term, the number of Americans on food stamps increased by an average of about 11,000 per day”.

I live in a city of about 100,000 people. That means every 9.5 days the entire population of my city is added to the food stamp rolls. Incredible!

College, higher education can be important. It’s essential for many vocations, but it’s not for everyone. Yet it’s what we are told – to achieve you must go to college. So parents/students take out massive loans to pay for school. Then what? “#23: In 2008, the total amount of student loan debt in this country was $440 billion. At this point, it has shot up to about $1 trillion.”

Why so much? Well, debt is the amount one owes – hasn’t paid back. If one has no job, how is one to pay the debt? Couple that with the crony socialism of the university’s ability to continually raise their tuition rates without suffering any Administration or media backlash and voilà, massive student loan debt.

Putting a bold punctuation on this is: “#33: When you break it down, the amount of new debt accumulated by the US government during Obama’s first term comes to approximately $50,521 for every single household in the United States. Are you able to pay your share?”

Well are you? This country, like those in Europe, cannot continue down this path. If things don’t change, and I mean radically and quickly, that $50,000 payment will come due.

Amnesty Equals Jobs Aplenty

by: the Common Constitutionalist

Great news! For those who haven’t yet heard, there appears yet another added benefit to passing the Senate illegal immigrant amnesty act. The benefits just keep piling up.

You may be skeptical now, but after you conservative racists hear the news – even you will support the real Republicans that just want to get things done.

For they, not us understand that just saying no isn’t good policy. After all, if the Democrats propose some ridiculous legislation that the country has survived without for 200+ years – Republicans can’t just say no. That would be ridiculous. We must always propose an “alternative”.

Like when my 14-year-old son says, “Dad, can I borrow your car?” I can’t just say no. That would be insensitive, and not good familial policy.

Anyway, back to the great news.

ABC news/Univision recently reported that if the amnesty bill is enacted, “it would add nearly 14,000 new jobs on average in each congressional district” in the nation.

Wow! I can honestly say I did not know that. Why didn’t Rubio, Ryan, Jeb Bush and Karl Rove just tell us that in the first place?

Let’s see: that’s 14,000 jobs times 435 congressional districts. That equals 1.7 gazillion new jobs! Actually, it is 6,090,000 jobs. That’s still pretty awesome. Where do I sign? Better yet, I’ll just call my Sen. Kelly Ayotte (Judd Gregg in a dress) and let her know – full speed ahead!

The ABC news report continued: “no district would see fewer than 7000 jobs created by 2023.” This is impressive – if you believe it.

Let’s say we do trust their figures. By the way, the figures were compiled by the “American Action Network”. Surprise – a Karl Rove Consortium.

So let’s run the numbers shall we?

The numbers are 14,000 (maximum) per district – 7000 minimum. Let’s split the difference at 10,500 jobs. Pretty big number, eh?

10,500 jobs per district times 435 districts equals 4,567,500. Whoa, that’s a lot of jobs. But wait, we’re not done.

It’s 2013 now. They say we’ll see these results by 2023. That’s 10 years. So 4,567,500 divided by 10 years equals 456,750 jobs created nationwide per year.

Now the jobs numbers are released every month so: 456,750 jobs divided by 12 months equals 38,062.5 jobs added nationwide per month. The .5 must be a midget – oops, little person – oops, vertically challenged. Sorry. Couldn’t resist.

So even assuming the numbers are accurate, it no longer looks so impressive, does it?

Quick recap: they want us to agree to legalize a minimum of 11 million illegals immediately to gain 38,000 phantom jobs a month. It’s the most absurd argument I’ve heard yet.

Are the experts compiling this magical data the same geniuses that can’t even accurately predict the employment numbers next month, much less a year or 10 years out?

One would have to be a complete moron to buy any of this crap! The pro-amnesty crowd is desperate, plain and simple. They know an overwhelming majority of voters are against it. They are trying to pull out any lie they have to to try to sell this smelly pile of manure.

This is one fight we are winning and can win if we just keep up the pressure.

Maxine Waters Dire Warning

Maxine Waters Warns 170 MILLION Jobs Could Be Lost Due to Sequestration Cuts — But There’s a Huge Problem With Her Estimate

If Congress allows sequestration cuts to take effect, more than 170 million Americans could lose their jobs, according to Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.).

“If sequestration takes place, that’s going to be a great setback. We don’t need to be having something like sequestration that’s going to cause these job losses — over 170 million jobs that could be lost,” Waters said.

She went on to say cuts must be done “over a long period of time.”

There’s just one problem with her estimation — and it’s a big one.  Continue Reading

Government Hires Most

(CNSNews.com) – Seventy-three percent of the new civilian jobs created in the United States over the last five months are in government, according to official data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In June, a total of 142,415,000 people were employed in the U.S, according to the BLS, Find-Government-Jobsincluding 19,938,000 who were employed by federal, state and local governments.

By November, according to data BLS released today, the total number of people employed had climbed to 143,262,000, an overall increase of 847,000 in the six months since June.

In the same five-month period since June, the number of people employed by government increased by 621,000 to 20,559,000. These 621,000 new government jobs created in the last five months equal 73.3 percent of the 847,000 new jobs created overall.

Choose Life…or Death

RALEIGH, N.C. – A federal judge has ruled it is unconstitutional for North Carolina to issue pro-life license plates unless the state offers similar plates supporting abortion rights.

U.S. District Court Judge James C. Fox ruled on Friday that North Carolina cannot produce or distribute the “Choose Life” plate.

Judge Fox concluded, “The State’s offering of a Choose Life license plate in the absence of a pro-choice plate constitutes viewpoint discrimination in violation of the First Amendment.”

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina Legal Foundation had filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina in Sept. 2011 on behalf of North Carolinians seeking a specialty license plate that supports a woman’s right to reproductive freedom.NC License Plate

“This is a great victory for the free speech rights of all North Carolinians, regardless of their point of view on reproductive freedom,” said Chris Brook, legal director of the ACLU-NCLF.

Brook said the government cannot create an avenue to express one side of a political issue while denying an equal opportunity to citizens with an opposing view.

Judge Fox granted a preliminary injunction in Nov. 2011 that temporarily blocked production of the “Choose Life” plate; that injunction is now permanent.

During the 2011 legislative session, the North Carolina General Assembly passed House Bill 289, which authorized the issuance of a “Choose Life” license plate.

However, officials say the legislature repeatedly refused to authorize a plate that supported the countervailing position in favor of reproductive freedom.

Six amendments were proposed in the legislature to authorize an additional new plate that stated either, “Trust Women. Respect Choice,” or simply “Respect Choice.” The legislature rejected all six amendments.

FL Senate President Laughs At Constitutionalist

Republican Florida State Senate President Don Gaetz showed the true face of tyrannical RINOs in the Republican Party when he openly laughed and mocked the Constitutional principles espoused by KrisAnne Hall, an attorney and former prosecutor, who supports the Tenth Amendment and the right of the States to nullify unconstitutional laws implemented by the federal government. However, it appears that Mr. Gaetz also indicated his support of the tactic of the seventh President of the United States Andrew Jackson in how he would deal with “nullifiers.” He would have them shot and hanged.

According to Mrs. Hall, she not only spoke to Gaetz, but even wrote him and explained the positions of men like James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton on State sovereignty. She then received what can only be explained as a violence threatening email from Gaetz to anyone that would support nullification. Here’s what Sen. Gaetz wrote:

Thank you for your email and for your passionate views.

Like you, I believe Obamacare is unconstitutional and wrong-headed policy. I have consistently voted in the Florida Legislature for legislation that affirms our state’s options, Nullificationobligations and sovereignty under the United States Constitution. I am working every day to ensure the election of national candidates who will repeal and replace this extraordinarily bad policy.

As to nullification, I tend to favor the approach used by Florida’s first Governor, Andrew Jackson:

It is said that one evening, while he was president, General Jackson was interrupted in his reading in his bedroom by an alarmed military aide who breathlessly reported, “Mr. President, the “nullifiers” are in front of the Executive Mansion with torches and guns. They are screaming that each state has the right to decide for itself which federal laws to follow. They threaten to burn us down if you will not agree with them.”

Without lifting his head from his reading, Andrew Jackson said, “Shoot the first nullifier who touches the Flag. And hang the rest.

Chaplain, I have sworn an oath on my father’s Bible before Almighty God to preserve, protect and defend the constitution and government of the United States. And that’s exactly what I intend to do. Count me with Andrew Jackson.

Dirty Coal

by: the Common Constitutionalist

Elections have consequences. There will be many that surface due to the reelection of Barack Obama.

I’d like to speak of one; energy and more specifically, the coal industry.

111 US coal plants have already closed due to the Obama administrations EPA regulations. That’s a full fifth of all US coal plants so far.

An additional 200 plus coal plants are slated for closure within the next 3 to 5 years.

The coal plant closures represent between 31,000 and 36,000 MW of power lost. That’s the equivalent of shutting down the electricity supply for the entire state of Ohio.

In October president Obama signed yet another executive order setting a national goal, or better put, arbitrary mandate of 40 GW of new “Combined Heat and Power” (CHP) generation.

CHP captures waste heat and uses it to generate steam to run turbines and for manufacturing.

The administration claims that “Investment” in CHP could save around $100 billion in energy costs over 10 years.

Well, the president can certainly hang his hat on that kind of savings.

Once again it seems Obama is looking out for the folks. Getting rid of those dirty coal plants will actually save us money. That’s a win-win. Getting rid of those planet killing, fossil fuel emitting coal plants and saving money to boot. That is until one examines the numbers.

So we the people, through the intelligent policies of this president reap $100 billion in savings.

I wonder if there are any costs involved in the savings?

Why yes, there just happens to be. Once again the Obama administration will cost business.

Obama’s own White House estimates it will cost American manufacturing facilities between $40 and $80 billion to upgrade.

Okay, well that’s not too bad. That still leaves a savings of between $20 and $60 billion.

But wait, we are not done.

Another $70 to $180 billion will have to be spent on new power plants or further, and in my opinion, unnecessary pollution controls for existing plants.

So the wonderful and highly touted $100 billion savings will cost the private sector between $110 billion and $240 billion.

Aren’t mandates great?

And who do you suppose might have to pay for all these new items and upgrades? Why the consumer, of course.

Power companies will have to raise their rates to pay for all the new equipment and upgrades.

But hey, do we not recall what the president said several years ago? It’s not as if he was trying to hide anything when he stated that, “Electric rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

Oh, and did I mention jobs?

It is estimated that for every job in the coal industry about 3.5 jobs are created to service it. New coal regulations alone are expected to cost the U.S. an additional 1.4  to 1.5 million jobs.

So when you people who voted for Obama get laid off because of coal related regulations fear not, for at least you will be able to call the unemployment office on your new “Obama phone”.

Let My People Work

by: the Common Constitutionalist

I believe we’ve heard many so-called conservatives claim we are in a jobless recovery.

That’s a hot one. There has been no recovery nor have there been any jobs.

We’ve also heard the democrats out on the talk show circuit and at every available podium spouting off about the 4.5 million jobs Barack Obama has created since taking office.

Well, there may have been jobs created, but a lot more have been lost.

Here’s a fun fact for you. When Obama was crowned King of the world in 2009, there were approximately 142,187,000 people employed in the U.S.

Today the number is 142,101,000. So, as Rush would say, for those of you in Rio Linda, there are about 86,000 fewer people employed today than at the time of Obama’s coronation in 2009.

Just think about that for a second. Consider the bold-faced lies the democrats and the media are foisting on the ill-informed American people. It’s actually criminal. And what of our side? Where is the well-informed conservative on the TV talking-head shows that can say, “You are lying and here is the proof? These are the facts, etc.

Where are the Paul Reveres, riding through the countryside, exclaiming these facts?

I guess, in a way, we are the virtual town criers. “It’s 2012 and all is NOT well”.

Anywho, the real employment figures are bad, but given a little more context, they become even more devastating.

One thing these talking heads never mention is the increase in the overall population growth of this country.

From 2009 to today, American population has increased by 8.8 million. So, there are over 8 million more people living here and we have 86 thousand fewer jobs than 3 years ago?

If they’re not working, what are they doing? Well, they are on some form of government assistance, like welfare, food stamps, disability, etc.

Today, approximately 45 million people are on food stamps. That’s 1 out of every 7 Americans! These aren’t just nameless, faceless strangers. They are friends, neighbors and coworkers, or maybe ex-coworkers in some cases.

People are becoming so desperate that when their unemployment runs out they are applying for social security disability. That way they at least have something to live on.

Now, I’m not going to discuss, the fraud and abuse by many, scamming the system just to receive a government check instead of finding a job. We all know there is plenty of that. We also know that many people could more heavily rely on their own families for assistance in lieu of the taxpayers. But the number is not that great and it can’t mask the incredibly weak employment figures. Like the 8.1% unemployment number that isn’t.

That’s a fake number. Pure and simple. It’s like a 300 lb. man stepping on a scale that tops out at 200 lbs. Just because the scale only reads 200, doesn’t mean he lost weight. If you recall, there are 6 unemployment categories ranging from U-1 to U-6. The  U-3 number is the one that everyone has settled on. I frankly don’t know why the government, news outlets, et al, have settled on the U-3.  I guess it makes things appear better than they are. If that’s the case, the U-1 number is under 5%. Like magic we could have almost full employment. The fact, or myth, that the U-3 unemployment number dropped from 8.3 to 8.1% is irrelevant.

In the last month alone over 580,000 people just gave up looking for work. The Labor Force Participation Rate, the number of people employed or looking for work, dropped to 63.5%, a level not seen since September, 1981, at the tail end of, hey what do you know, the Carter administration. That’s how that 8.3 dropped to 8.1. Those, over half a million poor souls, are now not counted. Voilà, less unemployment. The real number, the u-6 is up around 15%.

And let’s not forget King Barack’s just enacted, defacto illegal immigration amnesty program . Hey, what’s a million or so more unemployed people who have no job and won’t be able to find one.

Nothing is more essential to moving a family forward, or a nation, than a job, and today America has less of them than when Obama became President. The hope and change experiment needs to come to an end.

So when you meet our conservative candidates out there on the campaign trail, ask them why they’re not pushing the real numbers and calling the fake numbers, what they are, fake. More people need to know this stuff.
