Globe is Cooling – That’s Why We Call it Climate Change

from IBD:

Don’t Tell Anyone, But We Just Had Two Years Of Record-Breaking Global Cooling

NASA data show that global temperatures dropped sharply over the past two years. Not that you’d know it, since that wasn’t deemed news. Does that make NASA a global warming denier?

Writing in Real Clear Markets, Aaron Brown looked at the official NASA global temperature data and noticed something surprising. From February 2016 to February 2018, “global average temperatures dropped by 0.56 degrees Celsius.” That, he notes, is the biggest two-year drop in the past century. read more

Is it Time to Flip the Script on Global Warming?

Well, here we go again. An event that was infinitely predictable and virtually right on schedule.

Sky News posted an article on December, 27, 2017 entitled: “Scientists predict ‘mini ice age’ could hit UK by 2030.” The article’s subtitle is: “A model of the Sun’s magnetic activity suggests the River Thames may freeze over within two decades, experts say.” Thank you to The Blaze for drawing my attention to it.

The Sun? The Sun you say. How on Earth (get it) could that huge ball of fire in the sky, that determines all seasons and sustains all life, have anything to do with a changing climate. Don’t we know by now that a changing climate has only to do with man – and more specifically, Western man. And by man, I don’t mean the all-encompassing “mankind,” but rather the endangered species known as Western White man. It’s our fault, for centuries-long “harassment” (latest buzz word) of the planet – for inventing fossil fuels and burning them with reckless abandon, thus giving the Earth a temperature. Don’t go blaming the Sun!

I can see the headline now: “Next Ice age coming – Millions will Parish – Women and Minorities Hardest hit.” read more

Limbaugh Gets It – Is it Global Warming, or is it Cooling?

Yesterday, Rush Limbaugh went off again over the myth of man caused global warming and this bogus Paris Climate Accord. So serious is this, that Rush, a hardcore Trump supporter, said that if Trump signs onto the Paris Climate Agreement, he may dump-Trump.

“It is crucial that the president not only not participate in this, he must actively withdraw from it … this is why the president — if he signs on to this, folks, I don’t know how I can continue to support him in other things.” Ditto for me.

He mentioned as proof that global warming is a hoax, the fact that the leftist media switches every several years between catastrophic warming and cooling. He’s right, although the cycle is actually between 30 and 40 years. And there is a cycle.

In fact, we have been warned of differing catastrophic climate change four times in just the past 120 or so years.

So let’s hop into the way-back machine or maybe Doc’s DeLorean. Let us take a journey in time via the irrefutable written record. Remember, if it’s in print it must be true. I’ll punch in the turn of the century, last century.

From the late 1800’s through the 1920’s Americans were convinced, via the print media, that we were heading for the next ICE AGE. Yes, Global Cooling! In 1895 the New York Times (the paper of record) wrote, “Geologists think the world may be frozen up again”. In 1912 the L.A. Times reported, “The fifth Ice Age is on the way”. Chicago Tribune, 1923: “Scientists say Arctic Ice will wipe out Canada all the way down to the Great Lakes”. 1924, New York Times: “Signs of a new Ice Age”. This reporting continued through the balance of the ’20’s. read more

Volcano Celebrates Anniversary

Two hundred years ago on April 10, the Indonesian volcano Tambora erupted, obliterating an entire tribe of people, cooling the Earth by several degrees, and causing famines and disease outbreaks around the world.
It remains the largest eruption on historical record: larger than the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, and roughly 20 times bigger than Mount Vesuvius, which wiped the Italian town of Pompeii off the map. If such a cataclysmic event happened now, the results would be even messier, experts say. read more

Global Warming Hoax – Read All about It

by: the Common Constitutionalist

In a speech to the League of Conservation Voters, a wacky environmental activist organization, Barack Obama said: “Republicans have ducked the question and said, hey, I’m not a scientist, which really translates into, I accept that man-made climate change is real, and if I say so I will be run out of town by a bunch of fringe elements, so I am just going to pretend like – I don’t know – I can’t read.”

Well, yes we can.

We can read that America’s National Snow and Ice Data Center, which is funded by NASA, revealed that ice around the southern continent (Antarctica) covers about 16,000,000 km², more than 2.1 million more than is usual for this time of year.

We can read that government scientists have falsified some of the world’s most often cited climate records by replacing actual temperature readings in the United States, Iceland and Australia with hypothetical numbers derived from computer models. It has been revealed that as much as 40% of temperature data are not real thermometer readings, but simply computer generated fiction. read more

All Hail Gaia; It’s Earth Week

by: the Common Constitutionalist

In case you missed it, it was Earth Day yesterday. Frankly, I don’t know how you could. If you turn on the TV, a radio or went on any Internet search engine you could not help but notice the in-your-face green themes.

Oh, and I’m sure this is just a happy accident, but yesterday was also the birthday of Vladimir Lennon, one of the fathers of the Communist Revolution and the Soviet Union. But I’m sure that was just a coincidence, when the greenies decided to make Earth Day the 22nd of April. Not that green is well known to be the new (communist) red or anything. Not that some call them Watermelon radicals – Green on the outside – Red on the inside.

But if you missed yesterday’s festivities, take heart in your good luck. The Earth Day celebration is now a week long event. Hooray!!

So in the spirit of Earth week – let’s look back to the beginnings of Earth Day and some of the predictions made by the scientific geniuses some 40 or so years ago.

Let us start with a quote from the chief organizer of Earth Day, Denis Hayes in 1970. Remember, these are men of science not prone to hyperbole.

He said: “It’s already too late to avoid mass starvation.” Well, that’s a gloomy prediction.

Then there was Stanford University biologist Paul Ehrlich, who had quite a bit to say regarding the state of our planet in the ‘70s. “By 1975, some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions. Other experts, more optimistic, think the ultimate food-population collision will not occur until the decade of the 1980s.” He continued: “Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next 10 years.”

Wow! Pretty bold prediction. Another gem from Dr. Ehrlich: “Air pollution… is certainly going to take hundreds of thousands of lives in the next few years alone.”

I’m surprised there’s anyone left on the planet. To date, I don’t believe Dr. Ehrlich has been right about anything… ever.

But he’s a scientist. He doesn’t have to be right. Wait…maybe I have that backwards.

Noted ecologist Kenneth Watt had a few gems of scientific wisdom to impart to readers about 40 years ago. He claimed: “By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate… that there won’t be any more crude oil. You’ll drive up to the pump and say, fill ‘er up buddy, and he’ll say, I am very sorry, there isn’t any.”

Of course, he couldn’t possibly have known in 2013, we’ve discovered more oil than we know what to do with. We’re just not allowed to access it. When I think about it, that whole “no gas at the pump thing” isn’t so far-fetched, considering the current administration.

Watt shared another pearl of undeniable truth with readers in the ‘70s: “The world has been chilling sharply for about 20 years. If present trends continue, the world will be about 4° colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but 11° colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.”

Wait… What?! Global cooling?  My how things change in a geologic blink of an eye.

And finally, the words of George Wald, Harvard biologist. He works at Harvard, so he’s really smart and would never mislead or exaggerate. Dr. Wald said: “Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.”

Well, great. I guess we took the correct action. I feel better.

Have you ever noticed these “experts” were not only wrong about every prediction, but most of them seem to predict decades out. It’s as if they knew no one could dispute their wacky predictions for a generation and after some 40 years we amateurs wouldn’t be smart enough to call them out on their dimwitted apocalyptic prophecies.

And by that time our worrywart society would certainly be on to the next impending doom. Like, say… Global warming.

Happy Earth Week!!

HuffPo Finally Admits the Existence of Global Cooling

from Breitbart:

Scientists believe they have discovered a near-unprecedented phenomenon – rarer, more elusive and mysterious than even the God Particle: an article in The Huffington Post on the subject of the environment and climate change which doesn’t once mention ‘man-made global warming.”

This extraordinary event was observed in an April 17th HuffPo article entitled ‘The Great Lakes Are Still Almost Half Frozen, And It Could Affect The Environment For Years’. The article notes that ice coverage on the lakes remains unseasonally thick – the second highest ice-cover for the time of year since recording began in 1973. It also dutifully mentions, as all HuffPo pieces must, that there have been disastrous environmental consequences, in this case “unprecedented duck deaths” and “disruptions to the fish ecosystem.” read more

Greenpeace Founder Testifies

Let’s hear about the devastating effects of human-caused global warming from Patrick Moore, one of the founders of Greenpeace.

Hearing date: Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014:

Statement of Patrick Moore, PhD

.

Before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Subcommittee on Oversight

February 25, 2014“Natural Resource Adaptation: Protecting ecosystems and economies”

Chairman Whitehouse, Ranking Member Inhofe, and members of the Committee.

Thank you for the opportunity to testify at today’s hearing.

In 1971, as a PhD student in ecology I joined an activist group in a church basement in Vancouver Canada and sailed on a small boat across the Pacific to protest US Hydrogen bomb testing in Alaska. We became Greenpeace.

After 15 years in the top committee I had to leave as Greenpeace took a sharp turn to the political left, and began to adopt policies that I could not accept from my scientific perspective. Climate change was not an issue when I abandoned Greenpeace, but it certainly is now. There is no scientific proof that human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are the dominant cause of the minor warming of the Earth’s atmosphere over the past 100 years. If there we re such a proof it would be written down for all to see. No actual proof, as it is understood in science, exists.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states: “It is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century.” (My emphasis) “Extremely likely” is not a scientific term but rather a judgment, as in a court of law. The IPCC defines “extremely likely” as a “95-100% probability”. But upon further examination it is clear that these numbers are not the result of any mathematical calculation or statistical analysis. They have been “invented” as a construct within the IPCC report to express “expert judgment”, as determined by the IPCC contributors.

These judgments are based, almost entirely, on the results of sophisticated computer models designed to predict the future of global climate. As noted by many observers, including Dr. Freeman Dyson of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies, a computer model is not a crystal ball. We may think it sophisticated, but we cannot predict the future with a computer model any more than we can make predictions with crystal balls, throwing bones, or by appealing to the Gods. Perhaps the simplest way to expose the fallacy of “extreme certainty” is to look at the historical record.

With the historical record, we do have some degree of certainty compared to predictions of the future. When modern life evolved over 500 million years ago, CO2 was more than 10 times higher than today, yet life flourished at this time. Then an Ice Age occurred 450 million years ago when CO2 was 10 times higher than today. There is some correlation, but little evidence, to support a direct causal relationship between CO2 and global temperature through the millennia.

The fact that we had both higher temperatures and an ice age at a time when CO2 emissions were 10 times higher than they are today fundamentally contradicts the certainty that human-caused CO2 emissions are the main cause of global warming. Today we remain locked in what is essentially still the Pleistocene Ice Age, with an average global temperature of 14.5oC. This compares with a low of about 12oC during the periods of maximum glaciation in this Ice Age to an average of 22oC during the Greenhouse Ages, which occurred over longer time periods prior to the most recent Ice Age. During the Greenhouse Ages, there was no ice on either pole and all the land was tropical and sub-tropical, from pole to pole.

As recently as 5 million years ago the Canadian Arctic islands were completely forested. Today, we live in an unusually cold period in the history of life on earth and there is no reason to believe that a warmer climate would be anything but beneficial for humans and the majority of other species. There is ample reason to believe that a sharp cooling of the climate would bring disastrous results for human civilization.

Moving closer to the present day, it is instructive to study the record of average global temperature during the past 130 years. The IPCC states that humans are the dominant cause of warming “since the mid-20th century”, which is 1950. From 1910 to 1940 there was an increase in global average temperature of 0.5oC over that 30-year period. Then there was a 30-year “pause” until 1970. This was followed by an increase of 0.57oC during the 30-year period from 1970 to 2000. Since then there has been no increase, perhaps as light decrease, in average global temperature. This in itself tends to negate the validity of the computer models, as CO2 emissions have continued to accelerate during this time.

The increase in temperature between 1910-1940 was virtually identical to the increase between 1970-2000. Yet the IPCC does not attribute the increase from 1910-1940 to “human influence.” They are clear in their belief that human emissions impact only the increase “since the mid-20th century”. Why does the IPCC believe that a virtually identical increase in temperature after 1950 is caused mainly by “human influence”, when it has no explanation for the nearly identical increase from 1910-1940?

It is important to recognize, in the face of dire predictions about a 2oC rise in global average temperature, that humans are a tropical species. We evolved at the equator in a climate where freezing weather did not exist. The only reasons we can survive these cold climates are fire, clothing, and housing. It could be said that frost and ice are the enemies of life, except for those relatively few species that have evolved to adapt to freezing temperatures during this Pleistocene Ice Age. It is “extremely likely” that a warmer temperature than today’s would be far better than a cooler one.

I realize that my comments are contrary to much of the speculation about our climate that is bandied about today. However, I am confident that history will bear me out, both in terms of the futility of relying on computer models to predict the future, and the fact that warmer temperatures are better than colder temperatures for most species If we wish to preserve natural biodiversity, wildlife, and human well being, we should simultaneously plan for both warming and cooling, recognizing that cooling would be the most damaging of the two trends. We do not know whether the present pause in temperature will remain for some time, or whether it will go up or down at some time in the near future. What we do know with “extreme certainty” is that the climate is always changing, between pauses, and that we are not capable, with our limited knowledge, of predicting which way it will go next.

Thank you for the opportunity to present my views on this important subject.

Attached please find the chapter on climate change from my book, “Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout: The Making of a Sensible Environmentalist”.

I would request it be made part of the record.

Mini Ice Age Coming?

The Sun’s activity is at its lowest for 100 years, scientists have warned.

They say the conditions are eerily similar to those before the Maunder Minimum, a time in 1645 when a mini ice age hit, Freezing London’s River Thames.

Researcher believe the solar lull could cause major changes, and say there is a 20% chance it could lead to ‘major changes’ in temperatures.

Sunspot numbers are well below their values from 2011, and strong solar flares have been infrequent, as this image shows - despite Nasa forecasting major solar storms

THE SOLAR CYCLE

Conventional wisdom holds that solar activity swings back and forth like a simple pendulum.

At one end of the cycle, there is a quiet time with few sunspots and flares.

At the other end, solar max brings high sunspot numbers and frequent solar storms.

It’s a regular rhythm that repeats every 11 years.

Reality is more complicated.

Astronomers have been counting sunspots for centuries, and they have seen that the solar cycle is not perfectly regular. read more

Global-Warming ‘Proof’ is Evaporating

The 2013 hurricane season just ended as one of the five quietest years since 1960. But don’t expect anyone who pointed to last year’s hurricanes as “proof” of the need to act against global warming to apologize; the warmists don’t work that way.

Warmist claims of a severe increase in hurricane activity go back to 2005 and Hurricane Katrina. The cover of Al Gore’s 2009 book, “Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis,” even features a satellite image of the globe with four major hurricanes superimposed. read more
