SEIU Will Kill the Fast Food Industry

If you live in a major city, soon if not already, you will not be able to get fast food.

What are the soccer moms to do? Here’s an idea. Go home and make dinner. It shouldn’t be that difficult, judging by what we see on the politically correct McDonald’s commercials. Just dress up like a clown and serve your kids apple slices and milk. And don’t forget to recycle!

Anyway, our old communist pals are at it again. The SEIU is whipping up a frenzy among fast food workers with a call to strike. Workers in many cities have already walked off the job.

SEIU boss Mary Kay Henry granted an interview with fair and balanced Seated in her posh Washington DC office she told Salon, “see the fast food workers as standing up for all of us. Because the conditions are the same.”

Really Mary? The same as what? The same as your condition? Not hardly.

In 50 cities across the nation workers will walk or have already walked off the job. The strike against all the major fast food chains is for more pay and a chance to unionize.

The arbitrary number they have chosen is $15 an hour. I say arbitrary, because it is based on nothing. Someone just pulled it out of a hat. Why not 20, 50 or $100 an hour?

The argument is always the same; a living wage. No one can live on $7.25 an hour, the current minimum wage. I’m sure that’s true, but the average fast food worker doesn’t make minimum wage. The average is at least $9 an hour according to the Bureau of Labor statistics.

Yet I suppose if the poor saps have the misfortune of getting tied up with the SEIU, they’ll need to make $15 an hour just to cover the union dues and Ms. Henry’s salary and bonuses of between $300,000 and $350,000.

But with picket line chants like the one in Chicago, they’re sure to succeed. “Hey hey, ho ho, poverty wages got to go.” I guess America really does have talent!

An employee at an Indianapolis McDonald’s says he has to look for a second job. “There are no good jobs hiring out here – it’s only fast food”, he said.

And there you go. He nailed it without having an economics degree. He’s neither a politician nor a talking head, but he nailed the Obama economy.

There are no good jobs out there. Heck, there are barely any bad ones. Those who are working should be thankful to have a job.

These fast food workers should be thankful there are still enough people to frequent the restaurants that employ them. These poor lemmings don’t realize the folly of their actions.

Raising their pay to $15 an hour (and actually it’s more like $20 an hour for the employer due to taxes and the like) will put at least some of them out on the street. Companies cannot absorb that kind of financial hit. Unlike the government they can’t just print more money when they need it.

And as for the SEIU; as long as they are able bleed dues from these unsuspecting dupes, they’ll be happy. Their only in it for the money.

I’d like to close with a little constitutional conservative rant.

There should be NO minimum wage at all! If I am able to find someone to do a job for $3 an hour why shouldn’t I be able to hire him or her?

Government price controls of any kind are not only unconstitutional but they either immediately or eventually damage the economy. That’s been proven time and time again throughout history.

A business owner, you know, the guy that takes all the risk, should be able to freely hire and fire anyone he wishes for what ever reason and for what ever pay he sees fit. I’m on a roll. He should also be able to freely discriminate against any customer or employee.

How can I be so crass as to say these things? Easy. The market will always take care of it one way or the other, without the iron boot of government lauding over it.

If I treat my employees like crap, they leave and go somewhere else. Soon I can’t hire anyone because of my bad reputation. Likewise if I treat my customers like crap I will have none left and be out of business. See! The market takes care of it. Works every time.

Phew! I feel better.
