Don’t Believe the Polls

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I just saw the lastest poll that the public supports our fearless leader Obama on the debt issue. It’s a crock. It’s a skewed poll and it’s done on purpose. When you see a political poll you must first look at whom they polled. If the poll is of adults (this one was), walk  run away. It’s bogus. Everyone that knows anything about political polls know if you want to skew a poll toward anything liberal or progressive, poll adults. The only polls that are at all accurate and honest are those of both registered & likely voters, equally split between the parties. They must not only be registered but are definitely going to be voting. In politics, if you’re not going to vote, you don’t matter.  That’s a fact! It’s a fact I agree with.

  1. Agreed, polls are political tools. Kind of like “lying with statistics.” You definitely need to look at who is being polled but also about *what* is being polled. Polls about whether to raise the debt ceiling are irrelevant because those being polled are not economic experts. For example, we don’t poll people to get their opinions on how to perform surgery. A poll of economic experts asking whether it would be bad for the US to default on our debt would result in 100% of them saying “absolutely not.” I don’t think any lawmaker on either side truly thinks it would be OK to default on our debt. It’s a game of brinksmanship to force Obama to raise the debt ceiling against the wishes of congress so he can take the fall in 2012.
