Students Take on Liberal Academic Establishment

The more things don’t change, the more they stay the same, as another college demonstrates its idea of campus diversity.

We’ve all been preached at by every diversity advocacy group from blacks, to Muslims, to feminists, to LGBT equality groups and more. Every special interest on campus has to be equally represented – all except Christians, whites and conservatives. Some may consider this to be redundant.

The University of Massachusetts at Amherst demonstrated recently just what diversity looks like on the average college campus. UMass – Amherst has approximately 1300 faculty members. Why is this important?

Well, a student run debate club hosts different events throughout the school year. The problem developed during a recent debate when the club needed to find a faculty member to present a conservative point of view. Out of 1300 teachers and professors, the club could not find one willing or able to represent conservatives. Not one!

It was so bad that the club “had to turn to Smith College, a private liberal arts school 8 miles away, to secure a scholar.”

This unfortunate yet all too predictable event caused the UMass University Union “to launch a petition this month calling onliberal-teachers administrators to offer more ‘intellectual diversity’ on campus.

Now many others and I have been highlighting this “diversity of thought” problem which has plagued college campuses for years. And every year it seems there is never any improvement. Quite the opposite in fact as the problem is worse than it has ever been.

Imagine a faculty of 1300 without a single black professor. Then just imagine the deafening uproar over that. This achievement would be impossible in any other business or venue. If you simply chose 1300 people at random out of any city in the nation, you would think at least one would be a conservative. I think anyone would agree. It would darn near impossible not to. Yet not one can be found at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

“We came to the conclusion that the petition was necessary because planning debates has been so difficult,” Owen Wiggins, a junior business management student at UMass and president of the student union said.

The Union’s petition accuses liberal professors of pressuring students to abandon conservative ideology in favor of leftist views, as “professors represent their views and ideologies in ways that make it seemingly impossible for any reasonable person to disagree with. Dissenters from left-liberal thought on campus are considered ignorant, intolerant and uneducated.” Of course they are. Diversity on campus is defined by skin color or gender, but certainly not by a differing point of view. This type of diversity will simply not be tolerated by the tolerant left.

Unlike leftist groups, the union petition states that, “We are not advocating one political ideology to the exclusion of others.”

This statement sums up conservative versus liberal on and off campus. Conservatives welcome all points of view, whether they agree with them or not. However liberals demand absolute fealty to the left and its ideology and actively try to shut down and silence any dissenting views.

This is clearly what is happening on college campuses nationwide and it’s good to see students finally taking a stand against the liberal academic establishment.

Wiggins says his only wish is that, “the petition encourages students on other campuses to voice their opinions as well. All students deserve an education immersed in intellectual debate.” I might add that all students also deserve an education immersed in intellectual honesty.
