Silent Running

Owls could hold the key to developing ‘stealth’ passenger jets, according to new research.

Being woken up at the crack of dawn by noisy airplanes could become a thing of the past thanks to scientists who are trying to replicate the ability of the birds to fly silently in search of  prey.

Owls rely on specialized plumage to reduce sound so they can hunt with stealth and scientists are studying the wing  structure in a bid to design better conventional aircraft.

Dr Justin Jaworski, of the University of  Cambridge, said: ‘Many owl species have developed specialized plumage to effectively eliminate the aerodynamic noise from their wings, which allows them to hunt and capture their prey using their ears alone.’

All wings, either natural or engineered, create turbulent eddies as they cut through the air. When these hit the trailing edge of the wing, they are amplified and scattered as sound.

Conventional aircraft, which have hard trailing edges, are particularly noisy in this regard.

But owls possess distinct physical attributes that contribute to their silent flight including a comb of stiff feathers along the leading edge of the wing, a soft downy material on top and a flexible fringe at the trailing edge.

It is not known whether it is a single attribute or the combination of all three that are the root cause of the noise reduction.

The researchers attempted to unravel this mystery by developing a theoretical basis for the owl’s ability to mitigate sound from the trailing edge of its wing, which is typically an airfoil’s dominant noise source.

Earlier owl experiments suggest their wing noise is much less dependent on air speed and that there is a large reduction of high frequency noise across a range where human ears are most sensitive.

Using mathematical models, the researchers demonstrated elastic and porous properties of a trailing edge could be tuned so aerodynamic noise would depend on the flight speed as if there were no edge at all.

Professor Nigel Peake, who presented the  study at a meeting of the American Physical Society in San Diego, added: ‘This implied the dominant noise source for conventional wings could be eliminated.

‘The noise signature from the wing could then be dictated by otherwise minor noise mechanisms such as the roughness of the wing surface.’

Joke of the Day

A man was at the horse races playing the ponies, losing all but his shirt.

He noticed a Priest step out onto the track and blessed the forehead of
one of the horses lining up for the 4th race.

Lo and behold, that horse – a very long shot – won the race.

Next race, as the horses lined up, the Priest stepped onto the track.
Sure enough, he blessed one of the horses.

The man made a beeline for a betting window and placed a small bet
on the horse.  Again, even though it was another long shot, the horse
won the race.

He collected his winnings, and anxiously waited to see which horse the
Priest would bless next.

He bet big on it, and it won. As the races continued the Priest kept
blessing long shots, and each one ended up winning.

The man was elated. He made a quick dash to the ATM, withdrew all
his savings, and awaited for the Priest’s blessing that would tell him
which horse to bet on .

True to his pattern, the Priest stepped onto the track for the last
race and blessed the forehead of an old nag that was the longest shot
of the day.

This time the priest blessed the eyes, ears, and hooves of the old nag.
The man knew he had a winner and bet every cent he owned on the old

He watched dumbfounded as the old nag came in last. In a state of
shock, he went to the track area where the Priest was.

Confronting Him, he demanded, ‘Father! What happened? All day long you
blessed horses and they all won. Then in the last race, the horse you
blessed lost by a mile. Now, thanks to you I’ve lost every cent of my

The Priest nodded wisely and with sympathy.

‘Son,’ he said, ‘that’s the problem with you Protestants, you can’t
tell the difference between a simple blessing and last rites.’

The Need to Maintain OPSEC

Dishonorable Disclosures

Intelligence and Special Operations forces are furious and frustrated at how President Obama and those in positions of authority have exploited their service for political advantage. Countless leaks, interviews and decisions by the Obama Administration and other government officials have undermined the success of our Intelligence and Special Operations forces and put future missions and personnel at risk. Mr. President; Why do you and your administration insist on jeopardizing this country’s Operation Security?

Arabic as a Second Language

Arabic Mandated in New York Public Schools is a Step Toward the Islamization of America

I’m all for learning a new language, even Arabic. I have a good friend who is studying Arabic so he can debate with Muslims in their own language. When I was in high school in the 1960s, some students took Russian. It wasn’t mandated.

Many Europeans know several languages. English is one of the most prevalent second languages around the world. When my wife and I traveled through China last year, we ran into people from all over the world who spoke English, including many Chinese. There was no need to know how to speak Arabic.

I’m a little suspicious when an upper Manhattan public elementary school mandates that its students study Arabic. I wonder what would have happened if the school had mandated that students learn Hebrew.

Beginning next semester, all 200 second- through fifth-graders at PS 368 in Hamilton Heights will be taught Arabic twice a week, the same amount of time allotted to science and music courses. There’s a good chance that Arabic will be mandated in other schools. (Why science isn’t being taught every day is a mystery to me.)

One reason Principal Nicky Kram Rosen selected Arabic — as opposed to more common offerings, such as Spanish or French — is because she claims it will help the school obtain a prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) standing.

I suspect that the IB program is more about the Islamization of America than anything else. The IB program is a UN/Agenda 21 Trojan Horse. A study of the IB program will show that there is an attempt “to put a ‘more Islamic face’ on the IB curriculum.”

Muslims are pushing Shariah law in the United States and fighting anyone who opposes them. The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) contacted Muslims to contact Kansas Governor Sam Brownback to ask that he not sign a bill that sponsors admitted was designed to stop the equalization of Shariah with our present legal system. The bill had broad legislative support and the governor signed it into law. There’s no doubt that CAIR will take the new legislation to the courts.

According to Angela Jackson, CEO of the Global Language Project, “Arabic has been identified as a critical-need language,” citing students’ future “career trajectories.” A critical need for what? What careers? Americans rarely go to school in Arabic-speaking nations. Arabic-speaking students come to America to get educated, many of whom then go back home to figure out how to bring down America.

The goal of the IB program is to soften up American school children to accept another pluralistic internationalist agenda.

V. I. Lenin may or may not have actually said that “the capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them,” but whoever said it understood the foolishness of many American educators, politicians, and liberal do-gooders. Here is a New York elementary school opening the door so the Islamic worldview can walk right and spread their propaganda unhindered. (Editors note: I believe it was actually Nikita Khrushchev who said the above statement)

This is time of year we all get a little sentimental as we reflect on the accomplishments & failures of the year gone by. We’ve all done some good things (I hope) and also some things we wish we could have a do-over. I know I have, but we can’t turn back the clock.

I hope my good decisions have outweighed my poor ones. Sometimes, I wonder. I guess I’ll leave that to God.

All in all, I’ve been blessed.

I wanted to thank everyone who has been reading and responding to my little blog these last few months.

Where else but in America can one just wake up one day & decide to do something like this. To be able to express myself & say virtually anything I like without fear of retribution. What a great country!

We are truly blessed to have been born here. If you’ve travelled outside the U.S., I’m sure you would agree. Lucky us.
With all our problems, we’re still the greatest country on earth. Small wonder people want to sneak in. I know I would.

If you’re out and about today, put a buck in the Red Kettle, say Merry Christmas; thank a veteran for their service. Spread some joy. Smile at folks and watch them smile back. Do what you can in your own corner of the world to make it better.

The upcoming year will be very interesting, so if you pray, please do so for our country.

I’m signing off for a day or so.

God Bless!

Separation of Church & State

So, I got into a discussion about this at the gym yesterday. What was I thinking? How is it that no one seems to know this stuff?

Despite popular belief, the separation of Church & State clause is no more in the constitution than the Santa clause. In 1947 a progressive Supreme Court justice, Hugo Black (appointed by the evil Franklin Roosevelt), somehow found it in the First Amendment establishment clause. You know it. “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise there of.” Black evidently saw something the founders didn’t & said, “ The first amendment has erected a wall between church & state. That wall must be kept high & impregnable. We cannot approve the slightest breach”. Kind of like the fence at our southern border, eh? It’s funny how judges refuse to look for our framers original intent. It’s not hard to find. I did. Thomas Jefferson explained it as a prevention of the establishment of a national religion. I understand that, but then I’m not a justice. Let’s see what James Madison said. You know, the guy that wrote the Constitution! He said, “ The people fear one sect might obtain a preeminence, or two combine together, and establish a religion to which they would compel others to conform.” How about we just go back to the constitution & stop relying on case law.
