The American Experiment is One of Balance

by: Brent Smith at the Common Constitutionalist

Yes, Thanksgiving is almost upon us. A day when families all get together and give thanks for blessings afforded us as Americans.

I personally have much to be thankful for, but that’s not what I mean about giving thanks.

Although it is often overused by we on the right – I’m thankful to be an American. It sounds cheesy and jingoistic. It may be, but that doesn’t make it any less true, particularly when you know American history and what our forefathers had to go through to achieve it. And no, this will not be a history lesson. Not much of one anyway.

I wish I could travel back in time, not to change anything, but just to thank the founders for what they did – thank them for their foresight. Assure them that they did the right thing – that they didn’t go through all that for nothing. That hundreds of years later we are still talking about it, still quoting them and trying to live their ideal.

I would assure them that all the crap they had to endure was not in vain – that they made a profound difference – and not just for us, but for the entire world. If it wasn’t for them, Earth would be awash in anarchy, despotism and dictatorships. read more

Shut Down the CFPB – Save the $650 Million

from IBD:

Like so many bureaucracies, the Obama-era Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a creation of the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill, began with the very best of intentions. But it has failed to do its job. Following the resignation of CFPB chief Richard Cordray, it’s a good time to consider shutting down the agency altogether.

CFPB is often mischaracterized as a “consumer watchdog” in the mainstream media. Consumer attack dog is more like it.

Set up to protect consumers from predatory lenders and rogue banks, the CFPB has in fact led to less credit for financially troubled Americans, and is arguably not even legal. And no, that’s not just our opinion.

An October 2016 Supreme Court ruling found CFPB’s structure to be unconstitutional, a violation of the separation of powers in the nation’s supreme law. read more

Video Podcast – How to Pay for Infrastructure

by: Brent Smith at the Common Constitutionalist

Today I discuss the nation’s infrastructure that is apparently in need of a serious upgrade – at least according to the current administration.

The question is how we pay for the new massive public works program. Well, some have floated the idea of increasing the gas tax by seven cents a gallon.

I explain why this is a bad idea, as is the reasoning behind it and whether we even should. read more

Video Podcast – Tom Perez – Graduate of Harvard LIE School

by: Brent Smith at The Common Constitutionalist

I would first like apologize for some wind noise that interfered with the podcast. It is only sporadic, but it does happen out on location.

DNC Chairman Tom Perez, graduate of Harvard Law School, claimed that the Electoral College, which elects the President, is somehow not in the Constitution.

Perez is too smart and well schooled for this to be a misstatement. Therefore, he lied.

Today, I discuss his lie, why he lied, and why the Electoral process is so important. read more

Just Let the NLRB Run the NFL

Recall that President Trump said, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners,” wondered the president, “when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a b**** off the field right now, out. He’s fired. He’s fired!’”

I said that no owner would have the stones to stand up to political correctness like that. I thought they’d be too cowardly to do it, even though at least a few are probably thinking it.

Well, I was wrong and Trump was right. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones came out and said practically that. He said earlier this week if a player disrespects the flag and national anthem by not standing, then the player will not play.

And sure enough, fans loved it. Even I, a Jerry Jones hater, loved it. But the players and the Players Union were not quite as fond of the Cowboys owner’s exhortation.

“Local 100 of the United Labor Unions filed a complaint against the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, alleging owner and general manager Jerry Jones has violated the National Labor Relations Act by threatening players if they choose not to stand for the national anthem,” writes ESPN. read more

Podcast – Explaining Gun Control and the Second Amendment

by: the Common Constitutionalist

First, I apologize, but I had almost immediate technical difficulties, so the podcast, after the opening, is in audio only. Such is life.

In this podcast, I give conservatives and gun rights advocates a little additional ammunition (pardon the pun) to combat the left’s soundbite arguments for confiscating our guns (which is truly what they desire), as well as an explanation of both the amendment process of the Constitution and the Second Amendment itself.

It’s surprising how many on our side cannot effectively argue these points. I hope this helps. read more

CNN’s Guide to Free Speech

by: the Common Constitutionalist

On the home page of CNN.com is an article, entitled, “The First Amendment doesn’t guarantee you the rights you think it does.”

I thought – okay – its CNN posting something on the Constitution. This has got to be good. And by good, I mean really bad. Virtually the only time the left positively comments on the Constitution, they refer only to the First Amendment, for which they can bend and twist to suit their needs. It’s as if the rest of the Constitution and Bill of Rights does not exist.

The article begins by recounting the entire First Amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances

It’s short, to the point and easy to understand. Apparently it is not, for the author feels obliged to drag out First Amendment expert, Lata Nott, of the Newseum Institute’s First Amendment Center, to explain.

At first blush I thought this a ridiculous notion, but then remembered just who, for the most part, is partaking of the wisdom of CNN – other leftists, who wouldn’t know a Constitution if you handed them one. read more

Trump U.N. Speech Will Not Soon be Forgotten

by: the Common Constitutionalist

The Trump speech at the United Nations was a walk-off grand slam home-run. And I don’t even like baseball. I thought I was watching Big Papi!

But enough already. I feel like a darn Yo-Yo – or maybe Michael Corleone, from the Godfather 3. “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.”

No, I’m not talking about the Mafia. I’m referring to my support of President Trump.

I’ve said at least a few times that I’ve developed shin splints as a result of jumping off and back on the Trump bandwagon. He’ll do or say something positive or constructive for the nation, and then follow it up a day or two later with something dopey – or vice versa.

This time around, he did something dopey, i.e., meeting with Schumer and Pelosi. I don’t care how clever you think Trump is – you don’t make deals with the devil(s) – nor do you even agree to meet with them. You don’t lend those two any legitimacy of any kind – ever. For his dalliance with the two democrats, I said I had one foot on and one off the Trump bandwagon.

Then he turns around and gives a speech for the ages at the United Nations – one that should swell the hearts of Americans who are sick and tired of the United States kowtowing to the despots and dictators who populate the U.N. read more

Let’s Eliminate the Electoral College

What a shocker. Hillary wants to dump the Electoral College because she won the popular vote. Frankly, with the recent revelations about all the election fraud, I’m not convinced she did that.

from the Blaze:

Hillary Clinton calls for elimination of the Electoral College

Host Anderson Cooper noted that Clinton refers to the “godforsaken Electoral College” in her new memoir about the election, titled, “What Happened.”

Leftist Latinos Demand End to Free Speech

by: the Common Constitutionalist

It’s a fact – possibly provable by science – that what little common sense many high school kids have, rapidly fades away when they go off to college. With any and all parental supervision removed, students believe they have license to be stupid.

Such it was at Cornell University, when a student and member of the Zeta Psi fraternity was heard chanting, “build that wall.”

The chant was heard, “near the Latino Living Center early Wednesday morning, less than 24 hours after President Donald Trump ordered the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals [DACA] program,” writes the Cornell Daily Sun.

To clarify the above statement, as the Cornell Daily Sun will surely not, President Trump did not “end” the DACA program. He suspended it for six months to allow the correct branch of government, the Legislative, to craft a lawful solution.

They, like all other leftist journals, would prefer their readers to believe racist Trump just ended it. I’m not defending Trump’s decision. As it was an illegal action, I think he should have just ended it and left it at that, but I’m not president. read more
