WHAT IS IT?

The animal is a camel spider, otherwise known as a wind scorpion – a cousin of both spiders and scorpions that has traits seen in both.

The camel spider is in the same group as arachnids, but isn’t a true spider.

Though the animals appear to have 10 legs, they actually have eight – the two extra leg-like appendages are sensory organs called pedipalps.

And with powerful pinchers and large jaws, it is actually closer in relation to scorpions than spiders.

Thomas Acosta, a builder in Phoenix, Arizona, spotted the camel spider near his home for the first time this week.

Speaking to KGun9, Mr Acosta said: ‘I didn’t know they are native to Arizona, I have seen camel spiders, but I heard of them in Iraq.’
